Starting a KTP Chapter¶
This roadmap adapts KTP's chapter-founding process and the Indiana University founding team's public documentation into a reusable guide for students and newer colonies. Exact approvals, forms, and timelines may change; confirm current requirements with KTP National and your school before acting.
Indiana is an example, not National policy
Indiana's 2025 materials show one chapter's early decisions. Local dues, GPA standards, officer titles, voting thresholds, schedules, vendors, and member requirements do not automatically apply to another colony. Use the current National template and campus rules as the controlling sources.
The path from interest to chapter¶
| Phase | Main outcome | Typical work |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Explore | Shared understanding of KTP and campus need | Introductory conversation, campus research, initial vision |
| 2. Organize | A committed founding EBoard | Try to staff the nine recommended EBoard portfolios, document any temporary combinations, and choose communication and meeting systems |
| 3. Prepare | Colony operating plan | Campus recognition, constitution draft, calendar, budget, recruitment plan |
| 4. Launch | Recognized colony | Review governance with Nationals and begin the first semester |
| 5. Develop | Evidence the colony can operate sustainably | Recruitment, member development, events, monthly check-ins, retrospectives |
| 6. Charter | Transition to an official chapter | Final review, founding record, approved date, systems handoff, national onboarding |
The full process commonly spans one planning period and one colony semester. Campus recognition or recruitment timing can make it longer.
Founding documentation¶
- Prepare the colony: campus fit, founding team, roles, constitution, and first calendar
- Governance and constitution: decisions, officer coverage, meetings, amendments, conduct, and continuity
- Finance and compliance: authority, budget controls, records, banking, EIN and annual-filing guardrails
- Recruitment: campaign planning, applications, interviews, selection, bids, and applicant privacy
- New-member education: a safe, accessible program covering KTP, careers, technology, leadership, and community
- Marketing and outreach: public campaign design, merchandise, company outreach, alumni, and campus relationships
- Technology and records: public site, private portal, ownership, access, releases, and handoff
- Advice from earlier colonies: communication, consistency, EBoard accountability, campus calendars, pacing, and mentor chapters
- Run the colony semester: monthly support, first recruitment cycle, programs, and evidence of sustainability
- Charter and hand off: transition review, founding record, official onboarding, and the first 60 days
Suggested first-semester sequence¶
| Before launch | Recruitment weeks | Development period | Charter preparation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Confirm campus and National requirements; form the founding team; draft governance; approve a conservative budget; establish public and private systems. | Publish a clear campaign; hold informational, professional, and community events; use a secure application and a documented selection process. | Deliver accessible education, technical and career programming, mentorship, social connection, and service; review workload and safety weekly. | Finalize governance and records; reconcile finances; document reusable lessons; complete private National requirements; prepare a 60-day operating plan. |
Indiana source map¶
The Indiana repository organized its founding artifacts into seven areas. This section maps each one into a safe public guide.
| Indiana source area | Reusable lesson | Where it appears here |
|---|---|---|
| Constitution | Define purpose, membership, board authority, meetings, programs, amendments, dissolution, university compliance, anti-hazing, and conflicts of interest. | Governance and constitution |
| Finance | Plan collections and reporting; establish the legal owner and tax obligations before opening accounts or filing forms. | Finance and compliance |
| Rush | Pair a public campaign with a secure application, structured interviews, documented decisions, and intentional onboarding. | Recruitment |
| Pledgeship | Combine KTP education, career development, technical work, leadership, mentorship, and reflection without coercion or hazing. | New-member education |
| Marketing | Use one campaign system across social posts, flyers, merchandise, and event details. | Marketing and outreach |
| Internal/external | Make outreach specific about mutual value and give relationships a clear owner. | Marketing and outreach |
| Technology | Separate the public website from authenticated member services and design access, data, ownership, and handoff before adding features. | Technology and records |

What Nationals should provide¶
- a single Chapter Growth contact channel;
- a current overview of KTP's mission, pillars, and expectations;
- approved constitution and operating templates;
- a chapter starter pack with planning and financial tools;
- a mentor chapter;
- predictable check-ins and written action items; and
- a clear charter-readiness checklist.
Public-information boundary¶
This guide omits personal emails, phone numbers, private drive locations, member records, financial account details, applicant information, and restricted internal forms. Share those through approved private systems only.
The Indiana source includes identifiable applicants and members, resumes, contact details, private links, financial details, and screenshots of restricted systems. Those artifacts are intentionally not reproduced here. See Information Classification before contributing a founding example.
